The splendour of Early Christian Monuments

Once the capital of the Western Roman Empire and now home to some of the most spectacular Early Christian and Byzantine monuments inscribed on the World Heritage List of UNESCO since 1996, Ravenna is just over an hour away by train from Bologna. A treasure trove of art, history and culture that is surrounded by farmland and nature reserves on one side and the  Adriatic Sea on the other, providing an endless array of experience whether you are looking for history, art, natural landscapes or marine life.

Bologna

An hour and a half away from Ravenna by train, but as the capital of the region of Emilia-Romagna and the founding city of Europes oldest and still-running university, Bologna not only merits a day's visit but even a sojourn of a few nights if you have the chance to. Their claim to be Italy's food capital only makes the attraction even stronger. A half-day or full-day guided visit of the city with lunch in a tyipcal Bolognese trattoria is well worth the effort, and all that is needed is an empty stomach.
Duration: 3-7 hours
